Teen Skincare 101: Building Healthy Habits Early

Teenage skin is going through a lot—hormones, stress, changing routines, and sometimes a few too many late-night snack runs. That’s why building a good skincare routine early can make a big difference, not just for now, but for years to come.

Why Skincare Matters for Teens

During the teenage years, the body produces more oil (thanks, puberty), which can lead to clogged pores, blackheads, whiteheads, and acne. While these things are common and completely normal, the right skincare routine can help manage breakouts and boost confidence.

But skincare isn’t just about acne. It's about learning how to take care of your skin, protect it from sun damage, and establish habits that will keep your skin healthy as you grow older.

Start Simple

You don’t need a 10-step routine or expensive products. In fact, less is often more—especially for sensitive or acne-prone teen skin. A basic routine should include:

1. Cleanser – Washing your face morning and night removes dirt, oil, and sweat. Look for a gentle, non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) cleanser and be sure to cleanse the skin for a full minute.

2. Moisturizer – Yes, even oily skin needs moisturizer! Choose one that’s oil-free or labeled “lightweight.” Moisturizing helps balance your skin and can actually reduce excess oil production. Hydrating gels are a great choice because they help sebum (oils) float and migrate out of the pore, reducing future breakouts.

3. Sunscreen – The most important step! Daily SPF (at least 30) protects your skin from UV damage, which can lead to premature aging and increase the risk of skin cancer. Use it even when it’s cloudy or cold.

Optional steps might include a spot treatment for breakouts or a gentle exfoliant once or twice a week, but stick to the basics first and see how your skin responds. Teen skin already has an exceptionally fast turn over rate so helping your skin by facilitating the natural functions is best.

Less = More in skincare.

What to Avoid

- Over Washing: Washing your face too often can strip your skin and make it produce even more oil.

- *Harsh scrubs: These can irritate the skin and make acne worse. Be gentle with scrubs, let the product not pressure do the work.

- Popping pimples: It’s tempting, but it can cause scarring and spread bacteria. Ice your breakouts, it helps soothe inflammation, speed healing and reduces post breakout discoloration.

- Trendy products with strong ingredients: Just because it's viral on TikTok doesn’t mean it’s right for your skin. Start with gentle, esthetician/dermatologist-recommended basics.

Be Kind to Your Skin (and Yourself)

Skincare is a form of self-care. It’s not about having “perfect” skin—nobody does. It’s about learning what your skin needs and treating it with patience and consistency. Teen years are full of change, and your skin might be, too. That’s normal.

So whether you’re dealing with your first breakout or just want to glow a little brighter, starting a simple skincare routine now can set you up for healthier skin—and habits—for life.
